To begin day two out on Centre Court today, we had the British Number 1 Katie Boulter debuting in singles at The Queen’s Club after a successful first doubles appearance yesterday. On the other side of the net – Australian Ajla Tomljanovic, who came through qualifying by coming from behind in both of her matches to secure a spot in the main draw. Boulter found herself serving for the set after breaking at just the right time to make it 5-3, but was denied when Tomljanovic came up clutch and broke back. The set then went to a tie break, which Boulter took 7-4, giving her the lead in the match. The 2nd set was a different story, with the Aussie getting an early break and not looking back. She trailblazed to a 6-1 victory in the set in just half an hour. After a difficult period, Boulter needed to regroup in the 3rd if she was going to win this one, but she handed an early break to Tomljanovic, making it 6 games in a row for the Australian – momentum looked to be very much with her. Neither player seemed to be able to hold serve in this set though! Three breaks of serve each, but a hold for Boulter at the right time left Tomljanovic serving to stay in the match. Once again, she was unable to stamp her authority in her service game, seeing Katie Boulter take the match 7-6, 1-6, 6-4 after 2 hours 21 minutes.
Over on Court 1, we had a great result for Heather Watson who came through qualifying over the weekend. Her straight sets win over Yulia Putintseva makes for the biggest win of 25 for the Brit! Yesterday’s match between Karolina Muchova and Maddison Inglis was then concluded after being stopped for light yesterday, Muchova came out on top ending the match 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.
It was then time for Emma Raducanu to face Spain’s Cristina Buca back on Centre Court, in what turned out to be a statement win for the British number 2. Victory was sealed by Raducanu in a little over an hour, with the final score ending at 6-1, 6-2, in what was a very strong showing from the young Brit. It was a clinical performance which saw Raducanu convert 4/4 break points whilst not losing a service game.
The final match of the day inside the Andy Murray Arena saw the reigning Wimbledon champion, Barbora Krejcikova, take on Rebecca Sramkova. It was a consistent showing from Sramkova who won the match in straight sets, in what can be classed as quite an upset considering her opponent’s recent success on the grass. Sramkova has earnt herself a place in the second round where she’ll face Emma Raducanu.
That makes it four British women through to the second round here at Queen’s with impressive performances from each of them!
