After two weeks of scintillating Tennis, we finally reached Men’s Finals Day! Appearing in his first ATP500 final, Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina has played in three 3 set matches already this tournament to get to the final today. On the other side of the net, our 2024 Champion, Tommy Paul. The American was looking to claim his second title here.
It was the Argentine who first inched ahead with a break of serve in the first set. However, when serving to win it, he couldn’t quite hold his nerve and Tommy Paul got the set back on serve. We went to a tie-break – a recurring theme in these Championships. The American started to iron out some of the mistakes that had crept into his game in the early stages of the match and was able to take the first set with a 7-4 win in the breaker.
The second set went the way of Francisco Cerundolo. Two breaks of serve were shared early in the set. It was Paul with the first, and at a set and a break up you generally start to think the match might be heading in one direction. Cerundolo though kept fighting and he got the break advantage right when it mattered most, in Paul’s final service game to win the set 6-4.
The final set was nail bitingly close with so many long games and real battles. The Argentine got himself ahead in the match for the first time since the first set. Cerundolo got the break to go 4-2 and he never looked back. This time he held firm to serve it out and win himself the Championship! A brilliant final that ended 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 and lasted 3 hours 2 minutes to set the record for the longest Queen’s final in history. Francisco Cerundolo won his first ATP500 title and first title on grass, and now joins the Club as our newest Member.
